Homestead Scones

Rustic and comforting, these scones are made with freshly milled whole wheat flour, perfect for cozy mornings and capturing homemade nostalgia.

Ingredients

Homestead Scones

  • 5-6 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
  • 2 1/2 Cups Warm Water
  • 1 Tbsp Yeast
  • 1/3 Cup Oil
  • 1/3 Cup Honey
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • Oil (for Frying)

Honey Butter

  • 1 Cup Butter
  • 1/4 Cup Honey
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon

Steps

For the Scones:

  1. In stand mixer, combine 2 1/2 cups of warm water and 1 tablespoon of yeast. Allow the yeast to activate for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
  2. Add 1/3 cup of oil, 1/3 cup of honey, and 2 teaspoons of salt to the yeast mixture. Mix well to combine.
  3. Gradually add 5-6 cups of whole wheat flour, one cup at a time, stirring after each addition. The dough should come together and become slightly sticky.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a oiled surface and knead it gently for a few minutes until it becomes smooth.
  5. Roll the dough into a long flat sheet and cut them into square scone shapes.
  6. In a large skillet, heat oil for frying over medium heat. Carefully place the shaped scones into the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown on both sides. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side. Once cooked, remove the scones and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

For the Honey Butter:

  1. In the stand mixer, combine 1 cup of softened butter, 1/4 cup of honey, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Whip with wire whisks until all the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated and fluffy.
  2. Serve the warm homestead scones with the prepared honey butter on the side.
